Page 3 of the Bismarck Tribune for Thursday, 23 October 1930. In the second column is the short item “Life Term Given Detroit Gangster,” credited to the Associated Press and datelined Detroit, October 22.

It reports that Philip Keywell, described as the first of Detroit’s notorious purple gang to receive a major prison term in a state court, was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Michigan state prison for the murder of Arthur Mixon, a 19-year-old iceman.

The Bureau of Investigation’s Detroit letter of 25 March 1932 also says that Phillip Keywell “was sentenced sometime in 1930 to life imprisonment”; see that letter. The OCR splits the surname as “Key well”; the scan reads Keywell.
