Front page of the Daily Alaska Empire, Juneau, for Friday, 14 October 1927. In the left column is the brief item “Two Merchants Shot and Killed; Mystery,” datelined Cleveland, October 14.

It reports that Joseph and John Lonardo, “commission merchants, supposedly well-to-do,” were shot and killed from ambush in a barber shop “today,” and that the identity of the gunmen and the motive were unknown to police.

This version calls the brothers commission merchants rather than sugar dealers; compare the Washington Times of the same day. The OCR prints “Jos eph aitd John Lonardo”; the scan reads Joseph and John.
