Front page of the Daily Alaska Empire, Juneau, Saturday, 16 February 1929. The masthead reads “Member of Associated Press”; the story itself carries a “CHICAGO, Feb. 16” dateline and no separate credit line in the OCR. The deck reads “‘Purple Gangsters’ of Detroit Are Identified in Chicago Crime” and “George Moran, Leader of Chicago Mob, Accuses Capone Gangsters.” The headline is confirmed on the page image; the OCR reads “6ANGMEN.”
The story reports that two women and a man living across an alley from the garage picked out, from police photographs, three Detroit men they said had rented rooms overlooking it in the days before the killings. It quotes George Moran: “There is only one gang that kills like that … and that is the Capone gang.” It notes that Capone was in Florida, and reports that “United States Attorney Swanson” (as printed) warned police officials to enforce the gambling and vice laws.
The photographic identifications are police statements, and Moran’s words are an accusation, not a finding. This archive does not name the three men from this page.
