Front page of the Daily Alaska Empire, Juneau, for Monday, 21 October 1929. In the left column is “One Time ‘Sugar Corn Baron’ Is Assassinated,” datelined Cleveland, October 21.

It reports that Frank Lonardo, one-time “corn sugar baron,” who had left the racket when his brothers Joe and John were killed two years before, was shot dead at a card table in a downtown barber shop the previous night. It says police were working on the theory that the killing was a reprisal for the slaying of “Tom Todaro,” described as a rival bootleg figure credited with plotting the Lonardo brothers’ deaths.

The theory is the police’s, as reported. This page prints “Tom Todaro”; other wire versions say Salvatore or Sam “Black Jack” Todaro, and no source filed here says they are the same man.
