Front page of the Daily Alaska Empire, Juneau, Monday, 27 January 1947, under the head “Al Capone Dies, Miami” and the deck “Once Wealthy Mobster Passes Away Penniless Man, Says Attorney.” The item is datelined Miami Beach, Fla., Jan. 27; the masthead reads “Member Associated Press,” and no credit line on the item is legible in the OCR.
It reports that Capone’s body “lay in a mortuary here today, waiting completion of plans for the funeral,” that Dr. Kenneth Phillips was with him when he died “in his 25-room villa on nearby Palm Island Saturday,” and that in Los Angeles his attorney, Abraham Teitelbaum, said “Al left no will and no money” and “Al still owed the government money when he died.”
The attorney’s statements about the estate are his, as reported. This archive does not take a finding about Capone’s estate or tax debts from this page.
