Front page of the Detroit Times, Last Edition (the second edition of the issue), Saturday, 13 March 1909. The headline reads “N.Y. Detective Is Slain in Italy by Black Hand Assassins: Lay in Wait for Him and Body of Joseph Petrosino Is Literally Riddled with Bullets.”
The dispatches, from New York and Rome, say Joseph Petrosino, chief of the Italian detectives of New York, was shot and killed in a Palermo street, that he drew his revolver and fired once, and that the Palermo police believed he was killed for papers about the Black Hand society that he carried. They say the authorities sent carabineers to search for the killers.
The page also prints a cable from the American consul-general at Palermo to the New York police commissioner, which says “Assassins unknown.” The Black Hand attribution in the headline is the paper’s and is not verified here. This archive files the page as a record of the day-after coverage.
