The Evening Star of Monday, 16 March 1891, prints on page 6 a report headed “The New Orleans Lynching. Italy Protests Against the Killing of Her Citizens,” with an Italian indignation-meeting subhead. It gives a detailed account of the speeches at the Clay statue, the march past the arsenal and the entry into the prison, including speakers who said the “execrable Mafia” must not be allowed to bribe jurors. It says crowds visited the prison on Sunday and that the damage would be repaired.
The headline and subheads are OCR-garbled in the Library of Congress text (“I.VXCIIIXO”), so the headline above is cleaned. Speaker names are read with OCR errors, and one is omitted. The speeches are quoted as the paper reported them; this archive does not adopt their claims.
