Front page of the Evening Star, 12 October 1926. The story is credited “By the Associated Press,” datelined Chicago, October 12, with the deck “Machine-Gun Slaying of Two Means Fatal Reprisals, Police Apprehend.” It reports that gunmen “mowed down five men in the shadow of Chicago’s great Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Name, on North State street, late yesterday.”

It names the dead as “Earl “Hymie” Weiss” and “Paddy Murray,” and the wounded as attorney William W. O’Brien, his investigator Ben Jacobs, and Sam Peller. It says the men were hit by machine guns firing “from a rooming house window” and from an automobile, just after leaving a florist shop across State street from the cathedral, and quotes an attache of the state’s attorney’s office: “It is another gang killing. No one knows anything.”

The page reports the shooting as police and witnesses described it on the day. It names no one as responsible, and neither does this archive.
