Front page of the Evening Star of Tuesday, 5 April 1927. The story is in the third column under the headline “Shots and Bombs Are in Evidence as Chicago Votes,” with the decks “Two Political Clubs Are Damaged as Gangs Throw Explosives,” “Polling Place Windows Shattered by Bullets” and “Policeman on Guard Fires at Fleeing Car—Drucci Slaying Quiets Hoodlums.” It is credited “By the Associated Press” and datelined Chicago, April 5.

The dispatch reports the bombing of two political clubs on the North Side early on election morning, “and the killing of Vincent “Schemer” Drucci, beer gang leader of the North Side, late yesterday.” It says: “Drucci was killed by a detective after he had been taken into custody. He quarreled with Detective Daniel Healy, who shot and killed him en route to the Criminal Courts Building. Drucci was armed when apprehended.”

The account is the Associated Press’s, written the next day, and “beer gang leader of the North Side” is the wire service’s label. No inquest record or police report of the shooting has been opened for this archive, so the circumstances are given only as the dispatch states them.
