Front page of the Evening Star, 17 May 1929. The story is credited “By the Associated Press,” datelined Philadelphia, May 17, with the decks “Arrests at Philadelphia Quickly Followed by County Jail Sentence” and ““Scarface Al” and Cline Plead Guilty as Trial Is About to Start.” It opens: ““Scarface” Al Capone and Frank Cline, Chicago gangsters, sentenced today to one year for carrying concealed deadly weapons, entered Moyamensing Prison at 12:50 p.m.”
A second paragraph under a separate dateline restates that Capone “was today sentenced to one year in the county prison on a charge of carrying a concealed deadly weapon,” that Cline, described as “Capone’s reputed bodyguard,” received a similar sentence, and that both pleaded guilty “when their trial was about to start.”
This page is the newspaper report of the plea and sentence; it does not describe the arrest itself, and this archive has not located the arrest-night story in an open archive.
