Page A-7 of the Evening Star, Monday, 13 October 1930, carries in its second column a story headed “”LEGS” DIAMOND FIGHTS FOR LIFE,” with the deck “Showgirl Questioned After Gangster Is Shot in New York Hotel.” It is credited “By the Associated Press” under a NEW YORK, October 13, dateline. The right half of the page is advertising.

The dispatch reports that Jack “Legs” Diamond “rallied today in Polyclinic Hospital from five bullet wounds inflicted yesterday by would-be assassins who burst into his room in a West Side hotel, fired on him and fled.” It says he was shot “in a room on the eighth floor of the Monticello Hotel on West Sixty-fourth street shortly before noon yesterday,” and that he told police he did not know his assailants. It reports that police questioned a woman staying at the hotel and that Mrs. Diamond came by plane from a summer home at Acra, N.Y.

The page reports a shooting under investigation and names no suspect. This archive takes from it the place and date as printed. The hotel’s street number is not given, and the woman questioned, a private person, is not named here.
