Page A-2 of the Evening Star, Wednesday, 22 January 1947. The item is credited “By the Associated Press,” datelined Miami Beach, Fla., Jan. 22, and opens: “Al Capone, fighting a battle with death, was reported as “much improved” today by his physician, who added, however, that he was “definitely not out of danger.””

It says Capone “suffered a stroke at his palm-fringed estate early yesterday, but rallied last night,” and quotes Dr. Kenneth Phillips: “His condition is much improved but he definitely is not out of danger because one can’t tell in a stroke of this type for two or three days.”

This is a short wire report of his physician’s statements. This archive cites it for the date and nature of the illness as reported, not as a medical record.
