The Fort Worth Daily Gazette of 17 October 1890 prints, on page 4, a special dispatch from New Orleans dated 16 October headed “Italians Did It.” A subhead says a society exists that orders the murder of anyone in its members’ way. The account matches the New-York Tribune’s of the same day: the ambush on Rampart and Basin streets, the chief’s six wounds, nine suspicious Italians in jail by daylight, and one witness, Mr. Peeler, who identified three of them.

The heading and subhead are partly garbled in the OCR. The society claim is the dispatch’s assertion, not a finding, and the headline’s conclusion was printed before any trial.
