The Indianapolis Journal’s front page for Sunday, 15 March 1891, prints an Associated Press dispatch of 14 March under a long deck that begins “Hennessy’s Death Avenged” and continues “Eleven of His Alleged Assassins Shot or Hanged by a New Orleans Mob.” The dispatch says a call for a mass meeting “at Clay square, on Canal street” appeared in the morning papers and describes the meeting, three short speeches, the first by Parkerson, the march to the prison, and the killing of eleven men. It says business exchanges passed resolutions approving the act and gives bribery of the jury as the cause.
The headline wording approves of the killings; it is quoted here as the paper’s and is not endorsed. The same Associated Press text appears in the Richmond Dispatch and, with a different headline, in the New-York Tribune. This is the page cited for the Clay statue pin in the research map records.
