Page 2 of the Indianapolis Journal for 15 March 1891 carries a background article headed “The Mafia and Its Work” on the Hennessy killing. It also carries a note that Solicitor-General Taft said the Italian trouble was “purely a State matter,” an interview attributed to William A. Pinkerton about the stevedore dispute between “Provenzano Brothers” and “Toney Matranga,” and statements by Giovanni and Pietro Provenzano, held in the Parish Prison since May on a charge of wounding while lying in wait.
The Pinkerton interview says the stevedore work had been done by the Provenzano firm, that a rival firm built up by Matranga took it over, and that Hennessy had been connected with the earlier case. The prisoners’ statements about a secret society are as a reporter printed them and are not court findings. The OCR reads “Provenzani” and similar in places. The page also carries unrelated items.
