A New Orleans dispatch of 17 March, headed “More Threats by the Mafia,” reports an alleged threatening letter to the Mayor, Parkerson and Wickliff, which Chief of Police Gaster thought a hoax. It says the Provenzanos and Matrangas were accusing each other of Mafia membership and that “in the Hennessy case there was not sufficient evidence to implicate Charles Matranga.” It reports that Joseph Provenzano called on Archbishop Janssens about Father Manorita’s accusation and that the grand jury was investigating the alleged bribery of the jurors.

The accusations are press reports, not findings. This is the page in which a March 1891 paper gives the full name “Charles Matranga” and the name “Joseph Provenzano.”
