Front page of the Indianapolis Times, Home Edition, Thursday, 14 February 1929, printed the day of the shooting. The page is led by Indiana Republican politics; the Chicago report sits below it under a long headline beginning “Two Carloads of Chicago Thugs Invade Warehouse, Massacre Beer War Foes with Volleys from Sawed-Off Shotguns,” with the deck “Arrest of Every Hoodlum and Racketeer in City Ordered.”
The United Press story, datelined Chicago, 14 February, says six employees of the “S. S. M. C.” Cartage Company were murdered with sawed-off shotguns and one man wounded when two automobile loads of men raided the garage shortly before noon. It places the building in the 2200 block of North Clark Street, as the page prints it, and says police found those inside shot, presumably lined up against a wall. It says police ordered every hoodlum and racketeer arrested.
This is a first-hours report: it gives six dead and one wounded, and later reports differ. Its identifications and its explanation of the motive are the wire service’s and are not taken here. Headline as read from the Library of Congress OCR text of the page.
