Front page of the Las Vegas Age, Saturday morning, 18 May 1929. The page’s main stories are local, including a radio talk on the growth of Las Vegas and Boulder Dam. The Capone item is lower on the page under “‘Scarface Al’ Lands in Jail,” with the deck “Noted Leader of Gangland Arrested and Sentenced in Philadelphia for Carrying a Gun.”

The United Press story, datelined Philadelphia, 17 May, says Capone and his bodyguard Frank Cline pleaded guilty to carrying concealed deadly weapons and that Judge John E. Walsh sentenced each to one year in the county prison, about 13 hours after their arrests. It says defense lawyers protested that the proceedings were “railroading,” and quotes Capone as saying he carried a gun because he was “marked for death.” A sub-item headed “Gang Leaders in Truce” (the OCR reads “Trace”) says Philadelphia’s director of public safety reported that Capone told him he had signed a peace treaty in Atlantic City with “Bugs” Moran.

The truce account comes from Capone through a Philadelphia official, as the wire reports it, and is not otherwise documented in this record. This page also serves as the same-week report of the Atlantic City meeting. Headline as read from the Library of Congress OCR text of the page.
