Front page of the Manning Times, a South Carolina weekly, Wednesday, 13 October 1926. The headline is printed “Stoic Gangland Stals in Silence”; “stals” appears to be a misprint, and it is recorded as printed and was read from the page image. The decks read “Shrouds Identity of the Machine Gunners” and “Without Clue to Upstairs Firing Squad, Opposite Cathedral.”

The Associated Press story, datelined Chicago, 12 October, says no one had been identified in the machine-gun attack of the previous day, fired from an apartment-building window opposite Holy Name Cathedral on North State Street. It says the attack killed two men it names, Hymie Weiss and Paddy Murray, and wounded W. W. O’Brien, a well-known criminal lawyer, and two of Weiss’s associates. It reports that a coroner’s jury began an inquiry and then continued it, and that officials believed gangland itself knew who the killers were.

The story says it was reported during the day that police had found and questioned Al Capone, and also that police would not admit it and that he was not in custody. Both statements are the wire report’s and are unconfirmed here. This archive files the page as a record of the day-after coverage.
