The front page of the Milwaukee Leader, Mail Edition, for Wednesday evening, 27 March 1929 has a one-column item headed “AL CAPONE IS ARRESTED FOR CONTEMPT,” datelined Chicago and without a wire credit. It says the United States government “today arrested ‘Scarface’ Al Capone … on a charge of contempt of federal court growing out of his attempt to dodge a federal grand jury summons.”
The sentence this archive cites reads: “The warrant was served on Capone as he emerged from the grand jury room in the federal building where he was being questioned concerning the activities of beer runners in the suburb of Chicago Heights.” The Library of Congress OCR splits the name as “Cap nne”; it is Capone. The item adds that he gave a $5,000 bond and returned “to his suite in the Lexington hotel,” and that he is alleged to have presented a false affidavit from a Miami physician to postpone his appearance.
The page prints no street address for the federal building. It reports an arrest on a charge; it is not a finding of guilt. The story on the same subject is filed as the 20 March 1929 page, one week earlier.
