Page 15 of the New Britain Daily Herald for Tuesday, 1 July 1930 prints an item datelined Chicago, July 1 (AP), under the headline “LINGLE SUSPECT CAUGHT IN RAID” and the deck “Police Claim They Have Man Who Pointed Finger.” It reports the arrest of a man the police say trailed Jake Lingle, a Chicago Tribune reporter, on the day he was killed, in a raid by state’s attorney’s men on what the story calls the Loop headquarters of the “Moran mob.”

The place of the killing appears in a clause: the revolver “the assassin dropped beside the reporter’s body as it lay in the Illinois Central subway under Michigan avenue at Randolph street.” The item adds that “it may even develop, detectives intimated” that the arrested man supplied the weapon, and that officials had rumors naming Lingle in connection with the operators of a gambling club.

The page is a report of a police claim. It does not give the date of the killing and does not establish who ordered or committed it, and this archive does not take those matters from it. It is cited for the street intersection the paper gives for where Lingle’s body lay. Line-break splits in the Library of Congress OCR are joined in the quotation.
