Front page of the Nome Nugget, Nome, Alaska, 23 February 1929. The item is datelined “CHICAGO, Feb. 23. (AP)” and opens: ““Nosey” Joe Lewis, with prison records of Illinois and Leavenworth penitentiary, was arrested in Detroit in connection with the Chicago gang massacre.”
It says a “murder map” found in his pocket diagrammed the area along the Lake Michigan shore near the North Clark Street garage, that he was overheard to say he “bumped off a party in Chicago,” and that a murder charge was placed against him. It adds that authorities planned to question a second man picked up the day before, whose name is garbled in the OCR and is not repeated here.
This is a short wire item on an arrest. Nothing on this page shows that the charge was proved, and this archive does not treat the arrest as a finding about the killings.
