At the foot of the third column of the Omaha Monitor’s front page for Friday, 4 January 1929, is a two-sentence item headed “Hold Holstein Kidnappers,” credited “New York, Jan. 4 (ANP).” It reads: “Michael Hornstein, one of the ringleaders in the Casper Holstein kidnapping, was ordered held in $25,000 bail when arraigned in court here Friday.”
“Hornstein” is the Associated Negro Press spelling; the other papers filed here print Bernstein. The $25,000 bail differs from the $100,000 that The Gary American reported a week earlier (28 December 1928). The two papers may describe different hearings or may disagree; the records filed here do not settle which, and no court record has been opened.
Directly above it the same column prints an unrelated ANP item about a man sentenced to ninety days in the workhouse as a “Number” banker after detectives said they found “policy slips and tickets on the baseball pool” on him. He pleaded not guilty, and his lawyer filed notice of appeal. He is not named here.
