A United States newspaper published in 1930 or earlier. Public domain in the United States. The Library of Congress serves the page from Chronicling America.

Front page of the Seward Daily Gateway, Seward, Alaska, Friday, 15 February 1929. The lead story is datelined “CHICAGO, Feb., 15, (AP)” and opens: “Seven members of a powerful North-side gang, headed by George Moran, were trapped in a North Clark street headquarters by five gunmen who lined them up with their faces to a brick wall and beneath a powerful electric light, and shot them to death.”

A second Associated Press item on the page reports the theory of Maj. Fred Silloway, assistant prohibition administrator, that police officers did the killing, and quotes Police Commissioner Russell that it “will be the end of gang-war in Chicago.” It says police were weighing four theories: two involving the liquor trade, one politics, and one a dispute in the cleaning and dyeing business.

The list of the dead in the first item includes names that later reports do not use. This archive keeps the page as a record of how the first wire reports reached distant papers, not as a source for who died.
