Front page of the South Bend News-Times, Friday, 15 February 1929, part one. The banner reads “Seven Gangsters Die in Chicago Underworld Battle,” with the decks “Warfare Breaks Out Anew Over ‘Liquor Racket’” and “Victims Lined Against Wall of Warehouse as Slaughter Starts.”
The dispatch, datelined Chicago, 14 February, says seven men were killed in a cartage company’s garage, said to be the stronghold of George (“Bugs”) Moran, and that five men arrived in two automobiles and entered the garage where seven men were. It says the sound of the volley was taken by residents for machine-gun fire, and that “no one was left to tell the true scene.”
The dispatch’s wording “massacre,” its account of a fight for the beer trade and its description of earlier killings are the paper’s. This is a next-day report from a distant paper, and this archive files it only as such. It does not take the casualty list or the motive from it. Headline as read from the Library of Congress OCR text of the page.
