Front page of the South Bend News-Times for Sunday, 28 July 1929. In the lower left is “Detroit Gunman Taken for Ride,” with the deck “Purple Gang Member’s Body Is Identified by Fingerprints,” credited to the United Press and datelined Detroit.

It reports that Irving Shapiro, 25, an alleged member of the “Purple Gang,” was killed and his body thrown from an automobile in front of an east side apartment. It adds that four alleged ringleaders of the gang “slept in the Wayne County jail,” awaiting removal to Leavenworth to serve 22 months after their conviction in federal court on Thursday for conspiracy to violate the prohibition law.

The descriptions are the wire service’s. The page does not name the four men; the Milwaukee Leader of 25 July 1929 does.
