Front page of the South Bend News-Times for Friday, 7 February 1930. The item “Detectives Hunt Kidnaped Broker,” with the deck “Authorities of 3 States Engage in Search for Max Price,” is credited to the United Press and datelined New Haven, Conn.
It reports that Max Price, a 62-year-old broker kidnapped on January 28 and held for ransom, was being sought by authorities of three states, and that two of nine people arrested, Samuel Handell and Harry Fleisch, were “said by New York police to be members of the notorious ‘purple gang’ in Detroit.”
The names are as printed. No record filed here says whether “Harry Fleisch” is the Harry Fleisher of the federal Purple Gang records, and this archive does not assume it. The page reports arrests, not charges or outcomes.
