Page 2 of the South Bend News-Times for Friday, 19 December 1930. In the lower left column is “Gunman Sues City for Return of Car,” credited to the United Press and datelined Detroit, December 18.
It reports that Joe Bernstein, reputed purple gang leader, sued the city for the return of his armored car, valued at $1,500, which he said police had no legal right to seize. It says the car was one of three seized in ten days after the “Buckley grand jury” ordered seven armored cars made at a north side garage to be confiscated.
The description of Bernstein is the wire service’s. The page does not report the outcome of the suit.
