A United States newspaper published in 1930 or earlier. Public domain in the United States. The Library of Congress serves the page from Chronicling America.

Front page of the Springfield Weekly Republican, 2 January 1930. The story carries the dateline “New London, Ct., Dec. 30—(AP).” It reports: “A veil of secrecy was thrown around” the Coast Guard investigation into the killing of three rum-runners early on Sunday, 29 December, by the crew of patrol boat CG-290. The crew of six were restricted to the base.

The report identifies the boat as “the C-5677, known as the Black Duck,” laden with 500 cases of liquor, and says that a separate inquiry would be held at Providence by state and federal authorities. It shares the page with other Coast Guard items.

This is the only Massachusetts title in Chronicling America that the research for this archive found for the period. The page reports the start of inquiries and does not state their outcome.
