The Sun’s front page for Friday, 17 October 1890, carries a New Orleans report on the shooting of Chief of Police David C. Hennessy near midnight and his death the following morning. It says two groups of men with revolvers and blunderbusses lay in wait at the corners of the block where he lived, that he drew his revolver and fired back, and that arrests of Italians followed.

It also repeats claims about earlier shootings among Italians and about societies called the “Mafia” and “Stoppaglieri.” These are the paper’s reporting of allegations. The Library of Congress OCR of this page is badly garbled (names and numbers are unreliable, and the chief’s name appears as Hennesser, Hennessy and Hennessey), and the headline was not read on the page image, so the headline field above is descriptive.
