Front page of the Union Daily Times, South Carolina, an afternoon paper, Tuesday, 12 October 1926. The headline reads “Gangsters Kill Three More Victims in Chicago, Over 100 Killed in Two Years” and was read from the page image.
The Associated Press report, datelined Chicago, 11 October, says W. W. O’Brien, a former assistant state’s attorney and criminal lawyer, was shot and probably fatally wounded, two “notorious gangsters” were killed and two other men wounded late that day when what it calls a gangland feud “blazed afresh.” It says the victims were ambushed on the near North Side almost in front of Holy Name Cathedral, that one party of attackers fired a machine gun from a second-story apartment window while a second party in an automobile fired rifles and machine guns, and it names the dead as Hymie Weiss and Paddy Murray.
This is a same-day report and says O’Brien was probably fatally wounded. The “over 100 killed in two years” figure is the paper’s. The Manning Times page of the next day, filed separately, carries the follow-up story.
