Page 31 of the Ventnor News for Wednesday, 23 April 1924 (the Library of Congress lists it as image 31 of the issue). The two left-hand columns are the end of an unsigned political column that begins on an earlier page, which was not opened. It weighs the candidates for the Atlantic City commission and for Safety Director ahead of the city election.

The writer says that one candidate “has been made the goat for things that should have been laid at ‘Nucky’ Johnson’s door,” that another “has declared himself a ‘Nucky’ Johnson man, after posing as an Independent,” and that a third “is the weak sister on the Johnson Slate.” The column speaks of “the Johnsonites,” hopes the People’s Party will “dethrone ‘Nuck’,” and says “there is an overwhelming feeling of unrest and perturbation in the ranks of the Republican Party about the leadership of Enoch L. Johnson.” It quotes an unnamed man outside the Apollo Theatre wishing that “‘Nuck’ would pack up his duds” and go South until after May 13.

This is an opinion column, and it is filed as evidence of how the name “Nucky” Johnson and the full name Enoch L. Johnson appeared together in Atlantic County print in 1924. It is not evidence of any crime, and this archive takes no fact about any candidate from it. The names of the other candidates are as the page prints them.
