Page 2 of the Washington Daily News, 26 March 1929. A note above the story says the material “was obtained by the United Press from men close to gangland itself, working in conjunction with the police and the special Chicago Crime Commission,” and that it had been turned over to the authorities. The story carries the line “(Copyright, 1929, by United Press)” and a Chicago dateline.
It opens: “Scarface Al Capone’s men massacred seven Bugs Moran gangsters in a North Side garage last St. Valentine’s Day because:” and gives three reasons: the killing of Tony Lombardo, a failure to agree on dividing “the profits of beer, gambling and vice,” and the killing of Pasqualino Lolordo. The deck adds “HIS CONNECTION IS VAGUE,” and the text says: “Just how much Capone himself had to do with the massacre is not known.” A short United Press item lower on the page, “Capone Goes Before Grand Jury Again,” reports that he had been ordered to appear before a grand jury.
The account is a press reconstruction from unnamed sources, not testimony or a finding. This archive does not take a motive or a culprit from it.
