Page 9 of the Washington Daily News, 18 May 1929. The story is headed “Al Capone Is Happy for Jail Shelter; Feared for Life,” with the deck “Philadelphia Officials Hint Atlantic City ‘Peace Meet’ Broke Up Amid Threats,” and a Philadelphia dateline. It opens: “The peace and security which Al Capone says he has been seeking for three years came to him today behind the” walls of Moyamensing Prison.
It reports the mayor’s statement that Capone seemed glad to go to jail and the report of a gang council at Atlantic City that “had broken up after six days amid threats.” Capone “denied all that, telling a tale of a formal meeting at Atlantic City at which elaborate articles of peace were drawn up and signed by Moran and himself.” The paper adds: “In a few days, officials said, the two men will be moved from Moyamensing to Holmesburg prison.” Capone talked with the Director of Safety, whose surname is printed Schofield; the OCR garbles his first name.
The mayor’s theory and Capone’s account are statements as reported. A 1933 FBI memorandum names Holmesburg as the receiving prison (Capone Part 31).
