Page 2 of The Washington Daily News, Saturday, 30 August 1930, carries in its third column a story headed “English Police Hunt for ‘Legs’ Diamond,” with the deck “Whereabouts of Gangster Remains Mystery as Captain on Boat Denies He Is Aboard.” It is credited “By United Press” under a LONDON dateline.

The item reports that “The whereabouts of Jack “Legs” Diamond, New York gangster and racketeer, was still a mystery”; that Scotland Yard “has been asked by New York police to co-operate in finding and detaining Diamond”; that Irish Free State police were asked to meet the steamship Baltic outside Queenstown; that the Home Office had decided not to allow him to land in England; and that “the commander of the Baltic maintained that Diamond was not a passenger on his ship.”

The page reports requests and statements of police and officials. It does not say what charge, if any, the New York police request rested on.
