Page 2 of the Washington Times, Wednesday, 11 April 1928. A report on the Illinois primary credits Senator Deneen with the “vim and vigor” that turned the campaign and says: “The change in public sentiment, it is conceded, was hastened by the killing of ‘Diamond Joe’ Esposito, Deneen lieutenant in the Twenty-fifth Ward, and the bombing of the Senator’s and Judge Swanson’s home the night of Esposito’s funeral.” It attributes Governor Len Small’s defeat more to “the third term jinx” than to dissatisfaction with his administrations.

The page’s headline for the story did not survive in the OCR, so the headline field says so rather than guessing. The page does not name Capone and says nothing about who killed Esposito or who placed the bombs.

No scan of this page is stored yet: the research pass saved the Library of Congress OCR text of the page, but the page image could not be downloaded while loc.gov was refusing requests, so the page shows a document plate. The scan is at the Library of Congress link.
