Front page of the Washington Times, home edition, for Wednesday, 23 July 1930. The item “Gang Guns Kill Radio Man,” credited to the International News Service and datelined Detroit, July 23, is in a left-center column.

It reports that Governor Fred W. Green and a National Guard commander flew to Detroit to take charge of the inquiry into the murder of Gerald “Jerry” Buckley, radio announcer, who was shot as he sat in the lobby of the LaSalle Hotel. It says police reported a lookout arrested and believed Buckley was killed by hired gunmen of gambling interests.

The page does not name the Purple Gang, and this archive does not connect the killing to any group. The gambling-interests theory is the police’s, as reported. Suspects named on other pages of the day’s coverage are not repeated here.
