Page 4 of The Washington Times, Friday, 29 August 1930, carries at top left a short item headed “IRISH BAR ‘LEGS’ DIAMOND,” datelined LONDON, Aug. 29 (I.N.S.). The OCR misreads the first word of the headline; it was read from the page image. The rest of the page is advertising and other short items.

The item says that the Irish Free State ministry, “announcing it had “definitely learned”” that Jack (“Legs”) Diamond was aboard the White Star liner Baltic, ordered the Queenstown alien officer “to refuse the gangster permission to land,” and placed a ban on his companions. It adds that the captain had told the authorities he was unable to locate Diamond on the vessel after a thorough search.

The item reports an order of a foreign government and a ship captain’s statement. It says nothing about a charge against Diamond in the United States, and this archive takes nothing more from it.
