Page 4 of the Waterbury Evening Democrat of Thursday, 16 October 1890, carries a short wire item under the heading “Chief of Police Murdered.” It says Chief of Police D. C. Hennessy was shot at from ambush the night before and fatally wounded, and that there are reasons for believing the fatal shot was fired by an Italian. The dateline reads “New Orleans, October 10” in the OCR, almost certainly 16. The rest of the page is unrelated.

It is among the earliest printed reports; the chief died on the morning of 16 October. This archive cites the page for the fact of the early report. It does not adopt the item’s belief about who fired.
