U.S. Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities (Church Committee), interim report

Church Committee report, p. 308: Senator Baker's additional views on the underworld and Havana gambling

In his additional views Senator Howard H. Baker, Jr. writes that the evidence 'strongly suggests' the underworld wanted Castro gone because his actions barred its control of the Havana gambling enterprises. It is a Senator's reading, not the committee's finding.

In the “Additional Views of Senator Howard H. Baker, Jr.” at printed p. 308 (PDF p. 312) of S. Rept. 94-465, Baker writes that the evidence “strongly suggests that the underworld was also quite interested in getting rid of Castro because of his actions, barring their control of the Havana gambling enterprises.” He sets this alongside the evidence that Roselli regarded the plots as a government project.

The passage is one Senator’s reading of the record in separate views. It is not the committee’s finding. It names Havana gambling generally and does not name any casino or person other than Roselli.
