The Vault file “Daniel Greene (Final)” has 74 scanned pages. The first, dated September 17, 1964, is captioned “Daniel J. Greene, President of International Longshoremen’s Local 1317, Cleveland, Ohio” and records a meeting at the United States Attorney’s office on September 14, 1964 to consider “an alleged job shakedown on the Cleveland waterfront involving Local 1317,” the subject of articles in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. FBI headings mark it a matter for the Accounting and Fraud Section.
Later pages record, from the Plain Dealer and from the United States Attorney, that a federal grand jury in Cleveland indicted Greene on November 13, 1964, the newspaper’s count being five counts of embezzling union funds and two of filing false union records. The last page, shown above, is a memorandum of July 21, 1966 from the SAC at Cleveland (62-1926) to the Director (92-7958). It reports that Assistant United States Attorney Dominic J. Cimino said Greene “was sentenced on July 15, 1966,” that “United States District Judge FRANK J. BATTISTI, Cleveland, sentenced subject GREENE to one year each on Counts 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6, all to run consecutively, or a total of five years,” and that on July 18, 1966 Greene filed notice of appeal from the guilty verdict on those counts under Section 501(c) of Title 29, “the embezzlement of funds of a labor union and falsifying records.”
Nothing in the pages read connects this union president with the Danny Greene killed in Cleveland on October 6, 1977, whom the Sixth Circuit describes in United States v. Licavoli. This archive does not treat them as the same man and does not link this file to that person’s page. The outcome of the 1966 appeal is not in the file read.
