Page 23 of Part 03 of the Vault’s Schultz file is a memorandum for the Director on Federal Bureau of Investigation letterhead, dated November 14, 1935, headed “Time - 4:45 P.M.” and “Re: Dutch Schultz inquiries.” It is signed by E. A. Tamm and stamped November 16, 1935, with a serial read as 23-2130-253 (the middle digits are faint). It was read from the page image.

Tamm records a telephone conversation with Mr. Whitley of the New York office “relative to the assignment of some Agent to head the inquiries into the leads obtained in the above matter,” and that he told Whitley “the matter should be held in abeyance for the time being until Special Agent [name redacted] is in a position to take charge of this matter.”

The page does not say what the leads were. With the October 25, 1935 memorandum and the April 25, 1940 memorandum, it shows the Bureau collecting information after the shooting and stating in 1940 that it was not investigating the killing.
