- A publication of the U.S. Department of State, Office of the Historian. A United States government work, public domain under 17 U.S.C. § 105; the document dates from 1890-91.
The document is signed by Geo. W. Flynn, Supervisor of Registration for the Parish of Orleans, on 15 December 1890, with a further certificate dated 16 December, and was sent to Washington by the U.S. Attorney after the State Department asked about the prisoners’ citizenship (Document 612, Attorney General Miller to Blaine, 20 December 1890, was read for context). For each man it gives a registration number, ward and precinct, an address, a birth year, and, where stated, naturalization or a declaration of intention. It names, among others, Antonio Bagnetto, John and James Caruso, Antonio Marchese, Antonio Scaffidi, Charles Pietzo (Petero), Charles Patorno, Frank Romeo, Joseph Macheca (“Born in Louisiana”) and Charles Matranga: “registered No. 599, Fifth precinct, Third ward, October 27, 1872 … Citizen by virtue of father’s naturalization. Born in Italy in year 1857.”
This is the record that spells the name “Charles Matranga.” Registration dates are printed as given; one entry’s dates look internally inconsistent in the print (Antonio Marchese is shown as registered in 1872 and declaring his intention in 1890), so they are reproduced here with care and not relied on. Street addresses in the list are not repeated on this page.
