The title page reads “Investigation of Organized Crime in Interstate Commerce. Hearings before a Special Committee to Investigate Organized Crime in Interstate Commerce, United States Senate”, and this volume is Part 8, headed “Louisiana”. The dates printed on the title page are January 25, 26; February 7, 1951. The volume belongs to the 82d Congress, 1st session. It is part of the printed record of the committee created by Senate Resolution 202 (81st Congress), the Kefauver Committee, and prints sworn testimony, a contents list of witnesses with page numbers, and a schedule of exhibits. The Internet Archive scan has 470 page images.
The session datelines place the hearings in New Orleans and Washington. The session lines print these rooms and buildings:
- New Orleans (session datelines name the city but not the room; S. Rept. 82-120 gives room 245, Main Post Office Building)
- Room 457, Senate Office Building
The contents page lists, among the witnesses, Marcello, Carlos; Marcello, Anthony; Kastel, Phillip Frank; Fogarty, John J.; Poretto, Joseph; Brocato, James (Jimmy Moran); Clancy, Sheriff Frank J.; Rowley, Sheriff C.; Ozenne, Sheriff Gilbert; Grosch, John J.; Miller, Beauregard; Moity, Warren James; Trapani, Sam. The names follow the contents page; spelling was corrected only where the OCR was plainly wrong. In the questioning of John J. Fogarty, associate counsel Downey Rice stated that the wire service received by one group “was transferred to 117 Huey P. Long Avenue, Gretna, from the Southern News Publishing Co.”; Fogarty answered that he did not know anything about it (p. 93). The address is counsel’s statement, not testimony. A list of witnesses is not a list of findings: the volume prints questions and answers, and this archive does not summarize them.
The session datelines name the city but not the room; Senate Report 120 gives room 245, Main Post Office Building, New Orleans. The title page OCR prints the year as “1961”; the session datelines read 1951. The contents page spells Porretto as “Poretto”; Senate Report 127 spells it Porretto.
The archive.org copy is a Boston Public Library scan of the Government Printing Office print, and the Internet Archive marks it not in copyright. The room lines and datelines above were read from the archive’s OCR text of the scan.
