Testimony of committee investigators Sherman Willse and George H. Martin on the Apalachin attendees (Part 32, p. 12260)

Part 32 of the Select Committee’s printed hearings, printed page 12260 (the stored image). Robert F. Kennedy asked investigator Sherman Willse about his study of “the illegal and legal activities that these individuals who attended the meeting in Apalachin were engaged in,” and Willse identified a chart made under his direction. The chairman received it as Exhibit 5; the print says it “will be found in the appendix facing page 12496.” Willse said red dots marked arrests and blue dots legal activities.

Willse said the committee was “concerned here with 58 names which are the names on the original list received by us. Since that time there have been five names added which we are not dealing with here.” Asked to name them, he said: “There is Charles A. Montana, of Buffalo; Nick Civella, from Kansas City, Mo.; Joe Filardo, also Kansas City; Neil Migliore, from New York City, and John LaRocca, Pittsburgh.”

Robert F. Kennedy said LaRocca “was one of those whom we subpenaed here before the committee, or attempted to subpena,” and “has taken off for parts unknown.” Investigator George H. Martin said other agencies had not been able to locate him either. Asked “Who is he in business with in Pittsburgh?” Martin answered: “With Gabriel Mannarino, I believe.” Kennedy added “And also Mr. Genovese,” and Martin said: “Michael James Genovese. He is the man.” Martin agreed that LaRocca “has a jukebox business in Pittsburgh.” He then said 50 of the 58 men on the chart had arrest records.

These are the committee staff’s statements under questioning, and Martin qualified the business link with “I believe.” They place no one in a family or a rank.
