A docket sheet in the habeas corpus dockets of the federal court at Chicago, held by the National Archives at Chicago in the Records of District Courts of the United States (Record Group 21), series “Habeas Corpus Dockets” (NAID 5661986). The research for this archive read the catalog’s extracted text for the unit and checked it against the page image stored here.
The heading reads “Habeas Corpus,” Case No. 84: “The United States of America, Ex. Rel. William Bioff, Petitioner, vs. Edward J. Denemark, Superintendent of the House of Correction of the City of Chicago.” Thomas J. Courtney, the Cook County State’s Attorney, is listed for the respondent and Walker Butler for the relator. A red stamp reads “Judge Sullivan Criminal Calendar.”
The proceedings, all in 1940: on 10 July, “Filed Petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus”; on 11 July the cause was set for hearing on 15 July; on 12 July the State’s Attorney filed a demurrer; on 15 July arguments were heard and the matter taken under advisement, “Holly, J.”; on 27 July, “Filed Memorandum - Judge Holly”; and on 30 July, “Demurrer to petition for writ of habeas corpus sustained and petition for writ dismissed.”
The docket does not say why Bioff was held in the House of Correction, and this page does not supply a reason. The name index in the same unit lists “Bioff, William 84” under 1942 in the catalog’s OCR, but the docket entries themselves are dated 1940.
