- A Bureau of Prisons record, public domain under 17 U.S.C. § 105. Series "Warden's Notebook Pages" (NAID 296686), Records of the Bureau of Prisons (Record Group 129), National Archives at San Francisco. The National Archives catalog marks the item "Use Restriction: Unrestricted." The series note says that some information on the pages is incorrect when compared with the fuller inmate files, and that clippings in the series may be copyrighted; this page is a prison form. The copy stored here is a downsample of the first digitized image.
The National Archives catalog titles this page “GARDNER, ROY GEORGE - Alcatraz Number 110 - Warden’s Notebook.” It is a Bureau of Prisons notebook form with an identification photograph at the upper right; the placard in the photograph reads 110. It belongs to the series Warden’s Notebook Pages (NAID 296686).
This is an older layout than the other notebook pages. The typed entries, as printed: name “Gardner, Roy,” number “110 AZ”; sentence typed “25 Years” and struck through, with a handwritten “50 yrs (see letter)”; crime “Robbery of the Mails”; district “D-ARIZ Phoenix”; received from “U.S.P. Leavenworth, Kens.” on Sept. 4, 1934; a handwritten line reads “Sent began: June 16, 1921.” The red header reads “TRANSFERRED TO USP LEAVENWORTH AUGUST 8, 1936.” The “Reasons for transfer” box opens, in quotation marks, “Transferred at his own request,” followed by a staff assessment of his conduct that this page does not repeat. Handwritten alias entries at the left edge are partly cut off in the scan and are not transcribed.
Catalog data, labelled as such: offense “POSTAL LAWS: ROBBERY OF MAILS (TWO COUNTS)”; received at Alcatraz 09/04/1934 from US Penitentiary, Leavenworth; transferred 08/08/1936 to US Penitentiary, Leavenworth; birth date 01/05/1884; death date 01/10/1940 at San Francisco, with a remark that gives the cause as suicide. The page itself prints no birth date. The case file (about 1,500 pages, not digitized) is described in a separate entry.
