- A Bureau of Prisons record, public domain under 17 U.S.C. § 105. Series "Warden's Notebook Pages" (NAID 296686), Records of the Bureau of Prisons (Record Group 129), National Archives at San Francisco. The National Archives catalog marks the item "Use Restriction: Unrestricted." The series note says that some information on the pages is incorrect when compared with the fuller inmate files, and that clippings in the series may be copyrighted; this page is a prison form. The copy stored here is a downsample of the first digitized image. The series note lists the 1936 first-incarceration page for 325-AZ as not extant; this page carries a 1958 transfer stamp.
The National Archives catalog titles this page “KARPAVICZ, ALVIN FRANCIS “CREEPY KARPIS” - Alcatraz Number 325 - Warden’s Notebook.” It is a Bureau of Prisons notebook form with an identification photograph at the upper right; the placard in the photograph reads “U.S. Penitentiary Alcatraz 325”. It belongs to the series Warden’s Notebook Pages (NAID 296686).
The typed entries, as printed: name “Alvin Karpavicz,” No. 325, received Aug. 6, 1936 from Leavenworth, age 27, date of birth 9/10/09. Offense “Conspiring to Kidnap & Transport,” dated July 27, 1936; sentence “Life”; district sentenced “Minnesota-St.Paul.” A stamp at the top reads “TRANSFERRED TO LEAVENWORTH” with “2-24-58” added in red. Red type on the page lists crimes linked to him by information from “criminal associates,” which are allegations and not convictions; this archive does not reproduce them. The “Reason for Transfer” box is staff opinion and is not repeated. The series note lists the 1936 first-incarceration page for 325-AZ as not extant and says microfilm printouts were interfiled, and this page carries a 1958 transfer stamp, so it is a later or reprinted page.
Catalog data, labelled as such: offense “CONSPIRACY TO KIDNAP & TRANSPORT PERSON IN INTERSTATE COMMERCE”; received at Alcatraz 08/06/1936 from US Penitentiary, Leavenworth; transferred 02/24/1958 to US Penitentiary, Leavenworth; the remark reads “RET TO AZ (09-21-58 L / 04-08-62 M),” which NARA does not expand; birth date 08/10/1908, with a flag in the remark questioning a 1907 birth year; death date 08/26/1979 in Spain. The page’s birth date (9/10/09) differs from the catalog’s; this archive records both. The case file (about 1,800 pages, not digitized) is described in a separate entry.
