A Bureau of Prisons record, public domain under 17 U.S.C. § 105. Series "Warden's Notebook Pages" (NAID 296686), Records of the Bureau of Prisons (Record Group 129). The National Archives catalog marks the item "Use Restriction: Unrestricted." The series note warns that commercial items such as newspaper clippings in the series may be copyrighted; this page is a prison form.

The National Archives catalog titles this page “BANGHART, BASIL HUGH “THE OWL” - Alcatraz Number 595 - Warden’s Notebook.” The identification photograph’s placard reads “U.S. Penitentiary Alcatraz 595”. The page records his receipt on 1-7-43 from Joliet, Illinois, the offenses of mail robbery and conspiracy, and a 1942 escape from Joliet.

The catalog’s remark field reads “MEMBER OF TOUHY GANG”. That is the catalog’s wording; the FBI’s own caption on its Banghart booking photograph also places him in the Touhy gang. The catalog records a transfer to the state prison at Joliet on 12/04/1954.

The catalog lists access for some notebook pages as “Restricted - Possibly” (staff review); this page is digitized, online, and marked use-unrestricted. The copy stored here is the first page, downsampled to 1600 pixels from the 8.9 MB catalog file; three further pages are digitized.
