- A Bureau of Prisons record, public domain under 17 U.S.C. § 105. Series "Warden's Notebook Pages" (NAID 296686), Records of the Bureau of Prisons (Record Group 129), National Archives at San Francisco. The National Archives catalog marks the item "Use Restriction: Unrestricted." The series note says that some information on the pages is incorrect when compared with the fuller inmate files, and that clippings in the series may be copyrighted; this page is a prison form. The copy stored here is a downsample of the first digitized image. The series note lists the original of this page as not extant and says microfilm printouts were interfiled, so the image may be such a printout.
The National Archives catalog titles this page “CARNES, CLARENCE VICTOR - Alcatraz Number 714 - Warden’s Notebook.” It is a Bureau of Prisons notebook form with an identification photograph at the upper right; the placard in the photograph reads “U.S. Penitentiary Alcatraz 714”. It belongs to the series Warden’s Notebook Pages (NAID 296686). The catalog lists six digitized images; the stored copy is the first.
The typed entries, as printed: name “Clarence Carnes,” No. “714-AZ,” received July 6, 1945 from Leavenworth, age 18, date of birth Jan. 14, 1927. Offense “Kidnaping & Escape Custody U.S.M.”; date of sentence April 19, 1945; sentence “#1: 99 Years & Life #2”; district sentenced “W-Oklahoma-Okla. City.” The red header reads “TRANS: To Med. Center SPRINGFIELD, MO. 1-15-63.” A red note records that he was removed to San Francisco on 11-20-46 for trial for murder as a result of the prison break of May 2, 1946, “at which time 2 officers were killed (and 3 inmates)”; that on Dec. 21, 1946 a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder with a recommendation for mercy; that the same day he was sentenced to “Natural Life,” to begin at the expiration of the 99-year sentence; and that he was returned to Alcatraz on Dec. 23, 1946. A handwritten line at the right summarizes the trial results for Shockley and Thompson. The “Reason for Transfer” box and the account of the offense are staff text and are not repeated.
Catalog data, labelled as such: offense “KIDNAPPING, ESCAPE FROM FEDERAL CUSTODY & MURDER”; received at Alcatraz 07/06/1945; transferred 01/15/1963 (no destination printed in the catalog description); the remark reads “YOUNGEST INMATE AT ALCATRAZ (18.5 YEARS)”; birth date 01/14/1927; death date 10/03/1988 at Springfield, Missouri (MCFP). The Bureau of Prisons names Carnes among the six prisoners in the “Battle of Alcatraz” and says that Carnes, age 19, received a second life sentence (BOP Alcatraz history).
